Transcription: Jamestown on the James River was founded in 1607. It was to be the first step in establishing a new English nation in Virginia. The settlers built a log fort to protect their tiny town from the local Indians. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in America. Captain John Smith was the guiding spirit of the new colony. His statue now faces the broad James River here. Today, none of the original buildings of Jamestown remains.
